Our monthly fantasy Book Club

Each month the Paper and Word team choose a paperback fantasy book for you to have delivered or collect in-store. We don't limit ourselves to recent releases or traditionally publishes titles.

You can choose to join the monthly meet up in the bookshop for nibbles and drinks (spaces are limited) or online!

How our book club works

Each month the P+W team will hand pick a fantasy book to read together.

We'll share this with you shortly after, and then ship your Book Club package to arrive before the new month begins. For £15 a month you will receive:

A paperback copy of the book
A miniature wax melt (in those book shaped boxes!)
Access to the P+W community Discord

You then have a month to read at your own pace and chat with other members through the Book Club Discord channels (you can even join a buddy read!). We meet online or in person at the end of the month to discuss allll of our thoughts!

You'll also get our Book Club Mail to your inbox, which includes further reading suggestions, discounts and reminders.

We are excited to offer regular free events to our Book Club members too!

In the past we've hosted bookshop signings, reading kick-offs, online Q&A's & more! We love to sneak these in whenever we can!

Key dates + info

✦ 8th - The following month's book will be revealed

✦ 13th - You'll be charged for the following month

✦ 20th - We'll begin shipping Book Club packages

✦ 1st - Reading officially begins + you get community access!

✦ Final Thursday of the month @ 8-9pm - Online meeting

(bookshop meeting day/time tbc)

You are in control of your subscription! If you decide you want to cancel/skip a month because you've read the book or don't fancy it, you can do so in your login before the 13th.

Book Club FAQs

When does everything begin

When you join, it will be ready to read our next book. Reading will begin on the 1st of the following month.

You won't hear anything from us until near the end of the month you join, when you'll then see a dispatch/collection email for your book club package.

You'll then get community access just before the 1st, where you can make your introductions and get ready for your first book club month!

WHAT BOOKS WILL WE READ

This is a fantasy book club, so we will always choose something from this genre and it's many sub-genres!

The book for the following month will be announced around the 8th (or you can leave it a surprise, if you prefer!). You can then pause/skip before your renewal on the 13th if you decide that month isn't for you, or you've already read it!

WHEN IS THE MONTHLY CUT OFF DATE

Our monthly cut-off date is the 13th. If you join before this, you'll read the next book with us.

If you join after the 13th, you will get your first Book Club package the following month.

Example:

Joining 1st-13th September - you will receive your package before the end of the month and read the October book with us.

Joining 14th-30th September - you will receive your package before the end of October and read the November book with us.

WHEN WILL I BE CHARGED

You will be charged immediately when you join the Book Club - after this you'll be charged on the 13th of each month.

If you join after the cut off date, you will still be charged immediately, but would then not be charged on the next 13th, it would be the one after.

ONLINE VS IN THE BOOKSHOP

Joining us online

We'll host a monthly meeting via Butter to discuss the book. You can join with or without your camera on and choose to participate in a way that you feel most comfortable with!

Online members get first dibs on bookshop meet-up tickets, as soon as spots free up.

Joining us in the bookshop

We'll provide some yummy snacks and drinks for the bookshop book club meet!

We have to limit the bookshop numbers due to limited space. If you wish to join in person and it's showing as full, you can join online to get first access to the next bookshop seat! If the seat is not taken by an online member, it will then be offered out to the general waitlist.

Bookshop attendance

We have a long waitlist of online members wanting to move into bookshop spaces, so to keep things fair we will remove in-person members who regularly don't attend.

If you miss three meetings within a six month period, your place will unfortunately be given to someone else.

If we have to reschedule a meeting and you are unable to attend the new date, this will not count!
